Today, I want to have a little bit of my own space to think of my memories and experiences about Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) to which I had a strong attachment. I will never forget it despite all the changes in our lives.
I still remember very clearly that the first time when I set foot at NMIT it was very difficult to hear and understand anything when people talked to me. Therefore, I lacked confidence and was afraid to communicate with people.
Who and what helped me to overcome this difficulty?
I am very happy because I have met my good teachers, who guided me through lessons and practice. During the time of studying, the teachers had to find the weak points of students. All the teachers were enthusiastic and very kind. We learned by good methods and a new approach. Obviously, I and my friends are improving at the four English skills.
I participated in all of the activities as this gave me a good chance to talk with native speakers. Moreover, we received useful advice from our teachers, “You should spend time listening to TV news and the radio everyday”.
Everyday we must learn new words to supplement our vocabulary via reading books, magazines; I had a useful method for learning vocabulary from my teachers in NMIT. How to remember and have good pronunciation? I should not learn individual words, but make collocations, learn family words with meanings and examples.
I practiced speaking and thinking in English; I should speak clearly and slowly in order to use the right grammar and pronunciation. In that way, I can control my ideas and have good sentence structure.
We had the best studying environment. Although, I still have a lot of difficulties, this helped me get a fundamental foundation, and now I can communicate more confidently and share my experiences with everybody.
Seven weeks for us to live and study in Nelson, that was not a long time but it was a worthwhile time. But what things will I miss the most about living and studying in Nelson?
I seemed to enter life there and become a New Zealander. Everything was wonderful. There were a lot of things that I will never forget about living and studying in NMIT but perhaps I will choose three things.

The first thing, I will never forget the teachers who helped us with enthusiasm during the seven weeks. We have a special love for them. Each teacher brought us something new and interesting. I will always remember Madeline. She is Second, I have many happy memories of my homestay members. They shared and encouraged me during the time. They ensured that I had many chances to talk and find out about their culture and way of living. Third, I will always miss the pretty green spaces with sunlight. Everything is beautiful. I love the landscape and people here very much. It is very hard to say goodbye to teachers, homestay family and my friends. There seem to be tears when I want to say thank you with all of my love and respect to teachers, homestay family and NMIT. I hope that one day I will have the chance to see everyone again. I would like to welcome you to visit my country, VIET NAM.
