I have worked in a number of secondary schools in the Wellington region. I help schools to develop good systems for collecting and analysing data. I also work with teachers to use this data to inform their planning in order to meet students’ needs and I support teachers to create learning environments which promote the development of students’ use of literacy strategies and thinking.
I have worked for three years with Tongan educators buiding their capacity to deliver professional development. I am a trained NZ KiVa facilitator.

My current research is into adolescent students’ word level literacy skills: spelling and vocabulary development.  I work to help teachers to understand how to support their students to see patterns in words and to understand spelling conventions. A complementary aspect of this work is to explore the ways in which knowledge of prefixes, suffixes and root words can help students with vocabulary solving skills.

Another strand of my work has involved supporting Heads of Department and Literacy Leaders to become effective leaders of learning.
